Wilbert Eugene Lehnert

December 21, 1944 — October 15, 2025

San Angelo, Texas

Wilbert Eugene Lehnert, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025 at the age of 80.  He was born on December 21, 1944, in San Angelo, Texas, to Willie Michael and Lillie Marie (Zelisko) Lehnert.

Wilbert spent his early years in San Angelo before moving to Haskell, Texas, following the passing of his father.  He returned to San Angelo, where he completed his education, graduating from Central High School in 1963.  He attended Angelo State University for a short time before embarking on his lifelong career in construction and home improvement.

On May 6, 1967, Wilbert married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betsy" Halfmann.  Together they built a strong and loving family, raising three children and sharing many years of laughter, travel, and memories.

In 1970, Wilbert founded Lehnert Painting and Remodeling, a business he owned and operated with pride for nearly 50 years.  His work can be seen across the Concho Valley, from small churches to many of the Shot's convenience stores.  His craftsmanship, reliability, and honesty earned him the trust of countless clients and friends. He also served as Betsy's "Permanent Maintenance Supervisor" at Halfmann's Cake Cottage, a role he fulfilled with dedication and love.

Wilbert was a long-time faithful member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.  He was an active member of the Festival Sausage-Making Committee, serving as chairman several times.  He truly enjoyed his time on this committee and appreciated the strong friendships he made while on it.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.  His faith and service to his parish community were central parts of his life.

Outside of work and church, Wilbert found joy in the great outdoors.  He loved hunting, fishing, boating, and snow skiing.  He enjoyed friendly games of Poker and Blackjack, and he and Betsy spent many wonderful days at their coastal getaway, fishing for redfish, trout, and flounder.

Wilbert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betsy; his children Chad Eugene Lehnert and spouse Sheila Zly Lehnert, Cory Don Lehnert and spouse Erin Semmler Lehnert, and Chelsea Dee Dennis and spouse Sloan R. Dennis Jr.; and his cherished grandchildren Colby Ryan Lehnert, Brady Austin Lehnert, Jack William Lehnert, Sarah Elizabeth Lehnert, Sloan "Tripp" R. Dennis III, and Abigail "Abby" Elizabeth Dennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Lillie Lehnert; his half sister Dorothy Adair and her husband Dean Adair; his parents-in-law Henry and Elvira Halfmann; and several other beloved members of the Halfmann family.

Wilbert will always be remembered for his warm smile, generous heart, quick wit, and welcoming spirit.  He brought laughter and kindness to everyone he met, leaving a legacy of love and integrity that will live on through his family and the many lives he touched.

A vigil/rosary for Wilbert will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025 at 6:00 pm at Holy Angels Catholic Church, in San Angelo, Texas.  His Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 10:30 am also at Holy Angels Catholic Church, with Very Rev. Santiago Udayar, and Father Charles Greenwell celebrating.

In accordance with Wilbert's wishes he was cremated and no public viewing will be held.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Shannon Hospital, Dr. Justin Jones, Dr. Erica Rabe, and the Hospice of San Angelo staff for their compassionate care and support during Wilbert's final days.  We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and sympathy during this time of grief for our family.  We appreciate your kindness and will hold you in our hearts always.

The family would also like to request that instead of plants or floral arrangements, they would prefer that you make a memorial donation in Wilbert's honor to either West Texas Rehab, Meals for the Elderly, or a charity of your choice.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
