Charles David Stubblefield

Nov 12, 1939 — Sep 6, 2026

Abilene, Texas

Charles David Stubblefield, 86, of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026. He was born on November 12, 1939, in Ballinger, Texas, to Charlie Stubblefield and Reba (Pitner) Stubblefield.

Charles was a generous man with a practical heart. He believed in being frugal whenever possible, but that never kept him from quietly doing special things for the people he loved. He had a way of giving without needing recognition. When his nieces graduated from high school, Charles secretly provided scholarships for them and continued to bless them with thoughtful gifts throughout the years. His generosity was often behind the scenes, but it was deeply felt and will always be remembered by his family.

Charles was a true Texas gentleman with a distinctive style all his own. He could most often be found in his favorite blue jeans, a pearl snap shirt, usually worn until it started to fall apart, and a pair of Justin Ropers. When he ventured out, his straw cowboy hat was his choice in the summer, while a felt hat kept him warm during the colder months. Interestingly, Charles had a particular routine with his hats: he would leave his hat in the car before going inside a home or restaurant, then comb his hair before walking through the door. Those small habits became part of the Charles everyone knew and loved.

He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 56 years, Nita, and treasured the life they built together. During the 1970s they enjoyed traveling together, making special memories on trips to Mexico, Washington, D.C., and other destinations. At home, Nita was always by his side, even helping him care for their cattle herds. Their years together were filled with companionship, adventure, hard work, and many treasured memories.

He had a love for the simple things, too. His absolute favorite place to stop for a hamburger in his later years was Burger King, and it was not unusual for Charles to swing through the drive-thru on his way home after a day spent fixing fences.

Charles devoted much of his life to managing his cattle herds, ranches, and oil wells. He was a smart businessman who enjoyed the challenge of making a good deal and had a keen understanding of business and the land. He took great pride in his work.

Away from work, Charles enjoyed spending time with his golf buddies at the Maxwell Municipal Golf Course in Abilene. Golf was a regular part of his life and gave him the opportunity to enjoy good company and a little friendly competition. He was also a devoted Texas Tech Red Raiders fan and made every effort to watch their games whenever he could.

Charles was also a wonderful storyteller and had a gift for making people laugh. Visits with him were often filled with stories, humor, and the kind of laughter that stays with you long after the visit ends. His wit, generosity, independent spirit, and unmistakable Texas character made him a truly special person to those who knew him.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Nita Pearl Stubblefield, his parents, Charlie and Reba Stubblefield and an infant daughter.

He is survived by his sister, Carol (Stubblefield) Bishop; and three nieces and two nephews.

A private family graveside service was held, and Charles was laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Nita.
